new baby threads

I got this XS women's sweater that had been accidentally over-felted at the last clothes swap, in December, and made it into a mitten sweater for Ambrose a couple of days ago. I'm convinced it is THE carless family in extreme cold toddler mitten solution.

The ends were cut off, then pinned and sewn sort of magically to fold down over his hands. I can't really explain it. I took pictures and looking at them now I don't even understand it. Laying in bed that night I realized there was a simpler solution - basically visualize a regular sleeve, folded on the crease, then the top layer only gets 5-6 inches taken off, in a rectangle. If you then sew that remaining flap down at the sides, you'd have warm, trapped paws that a dextrous adult could liberate when she chose to. However that might involve stretching the sleeve a bit to remove. Anyway my way is sort of bulky but it works! With his coat on over it he can't remove them. Magic.

Rolled up.

Yesterday Daddy brought home a beautiful "Daddy coat" (one which is fashionable, manly, grown-up looking, and may resemble an article of Daddy's, which here is the case, obviously! not to be confused with "Daddy shirt", which usually means plaid)

Ambrose was very excited, wore it zipped, unzipped, then carried it around the house on a hanger for a good ten minutes, resting it on various doorknobs and things to admire the effect. It's 3T Old Navy (thrifted). A real find!
